about

There was a Grotto next to the school I went to as a kid and it had the creepiest angel statues ever. Partly because I thought their glass eyes looked like real human eyes. In fact there were many people who felt the same way, including my sisters. Creepiest shit ever.

About a month ago a friend of mine showed me a song by a black metal band called Ossaert called "De Geest en de Vervoering". The intro sounds like an eerie old church recording with electric guitar slowly fading in which makes it sound more menacing and evil. I fucking loved it. Couldn't stop listening to it. Actually listened to it about 7 times in a row that night. It was the kind of thing where you see something that's disgusting or disturbing and yet you can't look away. It also made me feel nostalgic in a way, partly because I grew up going to church every Sunday as a kid and went to a Catholic school. And just the nature of the recording itself sounded super old. It inspired me to want to make something like that of my own.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when me and my sister Collette decided to take a trip back to the grotto to photograph the angel statues for the cover art of this song. Being back there felt very weird, creepy, uneasy. Lot of mixed feelings. It was like going back in time. It basically looked and felt exactly the same, but also very different.

Collette happens to be an amazing photographer and took prolly the creepiest pictures ever of these statues. Out of the ones she took I chose the 2 that gave me the most visceral reaction of disgust and fear. Out of those I chose this one since the angel looks like she's towering over you. Looks even more menacing than some of the others.
